THE STORY BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN

Avin Sharma is a father of two South San Francisco public school students, a finance professional and a community leader running for the South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Trustees, Area C.

For Avin, the work of the school board is personal. He and his wife are raising two daughters in district schools. He wants every student to build strong reading, writing and math skills and graduate prepared for what comes next, whether that means college, technical training, an apprenticeship or a career.

Avin serves as Assistant Director of Finance at UCSF and brings more than 20 years of experience in finance, engineering and operations. He previously spent nearly a decade at Stanford University, where his responsibilities included overseeing an $80 million technology budget. His work has involved long-term financial planning, improving budget transparency and helping organizations use their resources more effectively.

He brings that experience to local public service as Vice-Chair of the district’s Measure T Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee and Chair of the South San Francisco Housing Authority Board. He has also helped connect UCSF faculty with local classrooms to introduce students to opportunities in medicine and other careers.

After immigrating to the United States, Avin pursued an education that combined engineering with business and finance. He holds a doctorate in business administration focused on finance, an MBA, a master’s degree in engineering and a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

Avin is running to strengthen student learning, support teachers and give families a meaningful voice in district decisions. With enrollment declining and budgets under pressure, he believes the district must plan ahead, explain its choices clearly and keep classroom needs at the center of its spending decisions.
